The Discipline of Accounting, Governance and Regulation at the University of Sydney Business School is proud to present the next Accounting as a Social and Organisational Practice (ASOP) workshop on 7-8 February 2024.
This workshop aims to be a signature forum that deepens and widens our knowledge of how accounting operates in organisations and societies. Accounting is a calculative practice that penetrates the contemporary world in a myriad of diverse ways - from online rating and review mechanisms that promise enhanced accountability to new forms of sustainability and impact accounting. Climate change, rapid developments in digital technologies, the spread of surveillance capitalism, the emergence of new business models, and shifts in the way we work and think about risks are transforming our world. ASOP strives to bring together academics to discuss how this influences the operation of accounting in organisations and society.
The workshop will be held in-person at the University of Sydney Business School, Sydney, Australia. It will feature 10 - 12 paper presentations and one plenary session. To maximise participation from all, papers will be circulated prior. There will be no discussants. The number of attendees will be capped at 60-70 in order to enable engaged discussion.
We are pleased to announce that the plenary will be given by Professor Kalle Kraus. Kalle is Professor and Head of the Department of Accounting at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). He is also part-time Professor at the Department of Accounting at Monash Business School. Kalle's research interests are in performance measurement, digitization, and accounting and sport. He has also published on the connections between accounting and emotion, risk management, and inter-organisational relationships.
We are delighted to announce that the industry speaker at ASOP 2024 will be Ms Susheela Peres da Costa. Susheela is Principal at the Stewardship Centre, and a director on the boards of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Beyond Zero Emissions, and US-based think tank, The Shareholder Commons. She was chair / deputy chair of RIAA from 2012-2022. Susheela has been advising financial institutions on responsible investment and sustainable markets governance, strategy, and implementation since 2006. Her clients include some of the world's largest banks, pension funds, wealth advisers and asset managers, and major global responsible investment organisations such as the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment; focussing on building institutional capacity to discriminate real from illusory impact. Her previous roles included leading Regnan's advisory and its stewardship programs.
There will be a conference dinner on the evening of the 7 February 2024. For catering purposes please confirm your attendance at the dinner.
In the past, we have run an ASOP Paper Development Workshop (PD Workshop) which is facilitated by staff from the University of Sydney and international conference attendees. Its aim is to provide the authors of selected papers with guidance and expertise in the development of their research. The PD Workshop is tentatively scheduled for 6th of February 2024. A final decision on the running of the PD Workshop will be made after the close of submissions for ASOP. The authors of selected papers for the PD Workshop will be informed in good time.
We look forward to welcoming you to ASOP in 2024 - it will be good to see our colleagues once again in person!
